Wappingers Buffet: Harmful if Swallowed

Having sampled most of the buffets within a 40 mile radius of New Paltz,Andy and I decided why not give this one a try as it was the last one to sample before we could come to a general consensus about how the buffets compare to each other. All I can say is, do not give this place your patronage. Everything was either par or sub par, sons the crab legs (it's pretty difficult to fuck up crab legs).

A lot of the sneeze guard was not labeled and on more than one occasion I had to ask the buffet attendant what it was i was intending to place in my mouth. Apparently this solitary glob of reddish meat was "honey chicken". I wasn't biting, literally.

I started off with some of the sushi samplings, grabbing the last tempura roll piece on the platter and something I later discerned was a Philadelphia roll. Not once in our hour plus stay was the sushi station replenished, the chef was either dead or asleep in the back.

The crab legs were being carefully consumed by a large black family. I stayed ever vigilant, my eyes locked to the buffet table, waiting tentatively while the crab legs were restocked. In a moment they were gone, a haunted memory of what could have been on my plate and in my belly. The second time I made a beeline for the crab legs as they were being replenished, carelessly knocking a small child to the ground in the process.
This time I was able to grab a few large crab legs and saunter back to my table with a self satisfied grin on my face. The crab legs were delicious, easy to crack and large portions of meat extracted with ease.

The rest of the spread was rather blase, your run of the mill Chinese/American. None of the chicken had much of a taste to it and a lot of the food was dried out, having sat under the heat lamps for way too long. The baby clams in brown sauce were pretty tasty, as was the walnut shrimp and the...well that's kind of it really.

Don't waste your money at this hellhole. Yelp was right.

(On a positive note, the food wasn't good enough to eat a large quantity of it and experience the dreaded buffet-itis.)

Palace Dumpling

Palace Dumpling

1671 Rt 9Ste

Wappingers FallsNY 12590

Today we journey deep into Wappingers Falls in search of some delicious dumpling to satisfy our craving. Me being Asian and having tasted some of the cheapest and best dumpling around like Vanessa' Dumpling House, Prosperity Dumplings, and Tasty Dumpling in Chinatown. I certainly can separated a good dumpling house from a bad one. We wandered into this hole in the wall when we saw the 5 star rating on Yelps. Everyone that had reviewed this places had a good story to tell from how friendly the servers were to how amazing the dumpling and noodles were. My first impression walking in to this restaurant was boy was i hungry. We got seated next to the window and while i was looking through the menu. I was surprise that they had bubble tea (tea with tapioca pearl), which i ordered without any hesitate. I'm a big fan of the cheap 4 or 5 piece of fried pork & chives dumpling i get in Chinatown. So i ordered a order of that which were 6.99 for a dozen and a wonton soup on the side. I was looking around the table while we waited for our food. I was surprise at the 4 different type of sauces that were available, which were sweet dumpling sauces, soy sauce, chili sauce, and a dumpling sauces. I'm just so use to using just dumpling sauces with thai Sriracha sauce that i didn't know what to expect from these dipping.

The food came and i was excited to try them, the first up were the steam pork & chive dumpling. I tried one and it tasted amazing. I put some sweet dumpling sauce on them and took another bite and tried the rest of the sauce. The dumpling were amazing, however when i put all four of the dipping sauce together it amplified my taste bud. I had sweet, tangy, a little spiciness, and a little saltiness from the soy sauce. The taste of it on the dumpling was just out of this world. The wonton soup came out last, the broth tasted exactly like the one i had at Vanessa' Dumpling House. It was just flavorful and amazing.

Newburgh Buffet
1431 New York 2300, Newburgh, NY 12550

My first impression walking into the buffet was a familiar one, like I had just returned home after a long trip at sea. All the reddish decorations and Chinese calligraphy reminds me of my Asian background. As we were seated, i looked around and saw the same photograph of a river and a mountain is in the background. It's like an Asian thing, the same exact one can be found hanging in most Chinese restaurants. I have read a lot of reviews on this particular buffet on Yelp and the reviews were mixed, but the majority of them were good. I'm here to experience first hand if those reviews are true or not. I loaded my first plate with coconut shrimp, fried shrimp, lo mein, pepper chicken, string beans, and mussels. My first impression was that everything looked delicious and even the sushi was fresh, prepared as needed by the man running the Mongolian BBQ section. My first bite into my lo mein and string beans was "wow" this is actually pretty good. I moved onto the mussels and pepper chicken, and to my surprise it was all "yummy". On to the last item on my plate, the fried shrimp. Shrimp are one of my favorite seafoods, however peeling it was always a pain in the ass. This was the case here, peeling it took forever. But it was well worth it, the shrimp was perfectly seasoned and fried. (You can never go wrong with fried food!) Next up was the sushi, i had some shrimp, eel, and some California roll. All of the rolls were really delicious, the only thing i can say bad about the sushi was they didn't have any tempura rolls. But, what can i say. "Beggars can't be choosers".

The duck were a little too greasy and was composed of mostly bones which wasn't a good selling point for me. Next up the dim sum was just plain nasty, it tasted like it had been sitting out for hours and was just very soggy in general. I tried both the egg drop soup and the hot & sour soup. Both had the taste of the each soup respectably, unlike some places which have tasted like watered down egg drop or soup that just plain tastes like nothing. The crab leg were perfectly cook, the shell was soft enough to break easily. The only downfall on this was how annoying it was to get the crab out of the shell. Another plus to this buffet was they had lychee which is an asian fruit found mostly in asian market only. I haven't seen that in most buffet.
